Welcome to Red class!

Our topic this term is ‘School days!’

This term in theme the children will learn about their own school and locality, both today and in the past. They will compare schooling in the Victorian era to their experiences today.

In English we will be continuing our Little Wandle Phonics, linking phonemes and graphemes and blending and segmenting to read and spell. We will be reading the book ’Dogger' by Shirley Hughes and using our Talk for Writing Story approach to write our own stories about favourite toys.

In our non-fiction writing we will be exploring non-chronological reports, linking with our History work about school in the past.

In Maths in the Summer term, Y1 children begin to explore the concept of multiplication and division. Children will explore counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. They begin fractions by finding half of shapes and quantities, followed by finding a quarter. In Position and Direction, children use language to describe turns. They also re-visit 2d and 3d shapes. They will learn the terms ‘left’ and ‘right’ as well as ‘forwards’ and ‘backwards’.

Reception children are learning about numbers to 20 and beyond! They will build numbers beyond 10, Count patterns beyond 10, and begin to develop spatial reasoning by matching, rotating, and manipulating shapes.

PE will usually take place on a Tuesday and children should wear their PE kit into school, following the school’s uniform policy.

Our class stories this term are a selection of stories by the author Shirley Hughes. Have a look at home and see if you have any of her books to share!
